International Bereaved Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 3

Mother’s Day is just over a week away, on May 10th, but International Bereaved Mother’s Day is THIS SUNDAY, May 3, 2015. This is a time to celebrate all the different manifestations of motherhood and I am going to do this is three ways:

(1)

I have made a documentary short film featuring five bereaved mothers talking about their experiences of loss, what the early days were like after their child died and which words and actions were helpful and which really hurt. The video will be posted here AND also on my YouTube channel (free to view). Please share and respond to the video in the comments section. I hope the film will spark meaningful discussion and openness.

(2)

I will be posting here on Wanted Chosen Planned, encouraging women to share their stories and to comment with encouragement for others. My post will be about the community of Moms and how it is our privilege to cheer for each other on the good days and hold one another up when life is really hard.

(3)

On Twitter, I will be tweeting about baby loss, aiming to bring awareness and, again, inviting men and women to share their experiences and how they found healing. I will be using the hashtags #stillamom and #babyloss. Don’t forget to use my handle: @_Alexis_Marie

The above three points will take place on International Bereaved Mother’s Day.

On the actual Mother’s Day I will share a gentle reflection post on Wanted Chosen Planned and if people wish to comment and tweet on that day, I will be available. I know Mother’s Day is extremely challenging for many women, men and families.

A thought: In the discussion around baby loss, the tone needn’t always be somber or despairing. I believe these Mother-honouring events can be filled with positive reflection, gratitude and encouragement. Our children are not with us, but they LIVED. That is worth celebrating. All Mothers, even if you are a mom with no living children; do something nice for yourself. Honour your identity, even if it is something others cannot understand.

I look forward to celebrating your motherhood and your children.

BIG HUGS

P.s. I will be hosting similar discussions around Father’s Day and International Father’s Day. Dad’s need support too!
